The London Tube - The 5 golden rules
New to the London Tube?
Here the 5 golden rules to be fully prepared to be on board!
I recently had to start taking the tube again and it’s funny how our memory deletes what’s totally unnecessary things and especially the bad ones… Anyway here we go again, Monday morning; the joy of peak hours and after all those years it was exactly the same as before so I needed to refresh my Tube skills to be well prepared to get on board...
RULE 1: Switch your happy mood to standby... yes in the tube you avoid to be happy and must adapt to this default social attitude which is in simple words: I carry full misery on my shoulders and life is not worth living especially at red signals.
RULE 2: Avoid by any means eye contact with your fellow human... that would be far too weird! Please respect urban solitude
RULE 3: Look at your mobile phone as much as you can even though you don’t have any network it doesn't matter! This will help you to once again avoid eye contact and check time more often to be even more frustrated / unhappy... red signals indeed… BTW if you have a sudden crush for someone on the tube you can always post on the tubecrush website!
RULE 4: Be on alert for potential free seats if you find yourself standing. The real challenge comes when you approaching a station, then you check those hands ready to grab a bag which will be the open door to a warm seat. Once secured then you realize it’s your stop. I love life (not too much - not out yet)
RULE 5: Last but not least rule: learn to read with a 60 degrees angle. No matter what newspaper or book you may have in your hands, your neighbour has something far more interesting.
